Stop Sleeping on Filth How to Actually Clean Your Bed Properly

Let us get one thing straight. Washing your sheets does not mean your bed is clean. That is like wiping your shoes and claiming you have showered. Your bed is a full setup mattress, frame, headboard and storage base all quietly collecting dust, sweat and crumbs from that late night biscuit.

Welcome to the Care & Maintenance corner of Funkybedz wisdom. Today we are tackling how to clean your bed properly without making it a full weekend project or needing specialist gear. Straight talking advice, Yorkshire style, and no nonsense.

Why Cleaning Your Bed Is Not Optional

You spend roughly a third of your life in bed. That is more time than your sofa, your car and probably your gym membership combined. Over time, beds collect dust mites, dead skin and everyday grime that can affect sleep quality and allergies.

A clean bed smells better, feels better and lasts longer. Especially if you have invested in quality bed frames and a supportive mattress from Funkybedz.

Step One Strip the Bed Like You Mean It

Start by removing everything. Sheets, duvet, pillows, mattress protector. Get it all off. Wash bedding on a hot wash where suitable to kill bacteria and mites.

Leave the mattress bare for a bit. This gives it a chance to breathe and releases trapped moisture. Already doing more than most people and we have only just started.

How to Clean Your Mattress Without Ruining It

Your mattress is not machine washable. Please do not try. But it absolutely can and should be cleaned.

Vacuum First Always

Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment and go over the entire surface slowly. Pay extra attention to seams and edges where dust likes to hide. This alone makes a huge difference.

Spot Clean Stains

Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water. Lightly dampen a cloth and blot stains gently. Do not soak the mattress. Ever. Too much water leads to smells and mould and nobody wants that.

Deodorise Naturally

Sprinkle baking soda lightly over the mattress and leave for a couple of hours. Vacuum it off. It helps absorb odours and freshens things up nicely.

If you are unsure how long your mattress should really last, our mattress lifespan calculator gives a realistic answer without sugar coating.

Cleaning Different Mattress Types

Not all mattresses are built the same and cleaning should match what you sleep on.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam hates water. Keep cleaning light and surface only. Proper ventilation is key. If memory foam comfort is your thing, our memory foam mattresses are designed to breathe better with the right care.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

Pocket sprung designs are more breathable but still benefit from regular vacuuming and rotation. Our pocket sprung mattresses are built to handle real life use but they still deserve a clean.

Upholstered Bed Frames Need Attention Too

If your bed frame is upholstered, dust and marks show quicker than you think.

Vacuum Monthly

Once a month is enough to stop dust settling into the fabric. Use the soft brush attachment and be gentle.

Spot Clean Carefully

Blot stains immediately with a clean cloth. Never scrub. If in doubt, check the fabric type using our fabric guide.

Freshen Without Chemicals

A light mist of fabric freshener or a natural spray works wonders. Just keep it light. Your bed is furniture not a car interior.

Cleaning Storage Beds Without Breaking Them

Storage beds are heroes of small bedrooms but they do need cleaning inside and out.

If you own one of our ottoman storage beds, lift the base and vacuum inside every few months. Dust collects faster than you think.

Wipe Hard Surfaces

Use a slightly damp cloth for wooden or hard surfaces inside the base. Dry straight after.

Mind the Mechanism

Gas lift systems are strong but they are not immune to grit and dust. Keep the area clean and never overload the storage section.

Wooden and Metal Frames Keep Them Fresh and Solid

Wood and metal frames are lower maintenance but not maintenance free.

Dust Weekly

A quick wipe stops dust building up and keeps finishes looking sharp.

Tighten Bolts Occasionally

If your bed starts squeaking, it is usually loose fixings not ghosts. Follow the official bed frame assembly instructions and tighten where needed.

TV Beds Cleaning Without Panic

TV beds bring cinema vibes to bedtime but they need careful cleaning.

Our TV beds should be cleaned with electronics in mind. Dust regularly around the TV housing and keep liquids far away. Very far away.

How Often Should You Clean Your Bed

This is the bit everyone asks.

  • Bedding weekly or fortnightly
  • Mattress vacuum every two to three months
  • Bed frame dust monthly
  • Deep clean every six months

Stick to that and you are doing better than most households.
